The Shrink's Theory
This
room is going to contain my theory of human personality. On the
surface it may not appear to be different from others to which I have
referred, or others about which you have already read; but it has
tremendous differences, and therefore very important applications.
Until
now, I wasn't quite ready to lay out my theory for you. I wanted
to complete the others first, so you could make your comparisons.
Now, I'm ready and this page is no longer a precursor to
"the real thing." It is! I will use this space to give you
my personal beliefs regarding human personality. I hope you attend
carefully and think deeply about what I say. After you have read it,
click on the icon below to read some about my thinking of our
spirituality. And, thank you for being so diligent getting this far.
Right
off, you'll note that The
Shrink's Theory
has three dimensions to consider rather than the two dimensions
mostly discussed in practically all the "closed-end"
theories. Like, most discuss the conscious and unconscious (with
conscience tossed in, now and then.) Mine discusses the
conscious, unconscious and sub-unconscious. And
mine is "open-ended" rather than is
"closed-ended". It considers the objective aspects and the
subjective aspects of human personality as the others; however,
mine especially considers the energective aspects. I
discuss the support system of human personality. I go beyond
the "iceberg" analogy -- that the conscious is
represented by the small part of the iceberg above the water's
surface; the unconscious is represented by the huge, hidden part below
the water's surface. Besides these, mine discusses the
water in which the iceberg floats -- the essential support
system. Think of it! Without the water, would there be any
iceberg? Without the energective (spiritual) would (or could)
there be any objective or subjective aspects about which to get
excited? I believe you'll find mine an all inclusive theory, not
a partial, incomplete theory -- actually, it's a new theory. I
hope you find it valuable in the quest to understand yourself -- and
appreciate yourself even more.
Here
are a few words that tell of what prompted my re-looking at the manner
in which human personality was viewed for so long: Many
scientists are intensely interested in the little understood energy
outside of human consciousness. I know I have been interested for many
years. As early as 1945 I postulated that the conscious/unconscious
models describing human personality did not explain fully its
complexity -- always it appeared a dimension was dismissed or ignored.
In the armed services in 1945 and in China, I could do little to
appease my concern. Home after the war, I began researching the
missing dimension. I suspected it would attach itself to that
mysterious energy.
I
knew the "old" theories didn't consider the support system.
Now, observing and studying the emerging theories of personality, I
was disappointed that each continued omitting the necessary dimension,
continued with what I described above, "the iceberg
description." As I said, not one considered the importance of the
water -- the essential support system.
Maturing
in knowledge and spirituality I stopped postulating and concluded that
the energy outside human consciousness was none other than the
Creator's energy; it is the support system of all that exists -- and
is the most important "part" of the human personality. For
this reason, that I know to be an absolute, it seems totally
logical that a third dimension must be added to the model -- the hierarchy
-- to totally explain human personality. What I am
saying is that besides the conscious and unconscious functions of the
mind, there has to be the spiritual, and which I, not wanting
to shift from recognized descriptive jargon, call the sub-unconscious
-- the third and missing dimension from all the other
theories, with the possible exception of the Jungian theory.
Obliquely, it does consider the energy outside of consciousness; still
in ways that don't give it its prominence and importance.

I
drew this schematic as one of the illustrations I used in Why
Not Do God? It
is a graphic description of how I view the importance of the
third dimension of human personality -- the spiritual. Notice I
describe it as the energective aspect? In this way I
demonstrate that it is analogous to the water that supports the
iceberg -- without which there would be no iceberg! Likewise, without
God's energy, nothing would exist -- there wouldn't be a universe nor
anything it contains. I will make a few remarks regarding the
functions of the objective, subjective and energective divisions
(conscious, unconscious and sub-unconscious); however, the
essence of my theory is contained in this simple graphic, showing
how dependent our "mental" part and our "physical"
part are on the energy and support (and especially the influence)
of God's energy. In my striving to find answers to explain the
mysterious energy that is outside of consciousness, it was an
amazingly little leap in faith to realize that, what has been such a
mystery for so long, had such a simple answer -- if only we'd looked.
Dr. Wilder Penfield, probably the most famous of
neurosurgeons, sustained that, "the brain does not explain the
mind fully." I will parallel this with my statement that
"the conscious and the unconscious of man do not explain the
personality fully" -- the third dimension of spirituality
brings it all into focus. As I said, I will make a few remarks
about the various levels of the personality and delineate some of
the characteristics of each. And, referring back to Freud who
said that the id, ego and superego are closely integrated; I say that
the symbiotic relationship among the conscious, unconscious and the sub-unconscious
is even closer integrated; however, the driving force is the energective
dimension -- God's energy. You ask, "Why does the sub-unconscious
have such prominence in the human personality?" I
answer this way: "The sub-unconscious (our spirituality)
is the gateway to God's energy. it is through this gateway He contacts
us and we Him! Our prayers and supplications are our communication
with God." And, believe me, there is power in prayer. Another
room will tell of our wonderful gift of spirituality. Also, read my
book Why

Very
briefly: Our conscious keeps us aware of reality. We are aware of our
environment, ourselves and others through our
conscious. It is that part of us in which we "live"
much of the time. Our unconscious is relatively a mystery to us --
hidden, un-noticed, behind the scenes. It has in its reposit our
memories of pain, guilt, sad times, happy times, biases, prejudices
and the material of our dreams (and we don't know how it does it, nor
how it functions.) Our sub-unconscious
is neither conscious nor unconscious, but its influence on both of
these levels of awareness is tremendous. Reviewing the
schematic, it is easily noticed that its energy comes directly and is
in constant touch with our Creator, is influenced by Him, can only be
utilized by us, never changed or altered (God never changes!) The
conscious language is that which we use in communicating among
ourselves in our culture and with other cultures; the unconscious
"language" deals in words, of course; still it deals in
symbols, metaphors, word games, steganograms and the
cryptographic material of our dreams. The language of the sub-unconscious
is unique. I consider it less a language than it is communication
without language. It deals more with presentiments and intuitions
-- an awareness lacking a need for input from either the conscious or
the unconscious, much in the manner of a pure noumenon, and having a
special source outside of the human mind's function. It lacks a need
for any filtered down language -- as I said it is a pure noumenon
(idea reached by intellectual intuition, without the aid of the
senses.) Pretty interesting stuff. But, then, finding out about our
Creator is always interesting "stuff" -- and so exciting. I
enjoyed researching and coming to this conclusion instead of
postulating for so long. It's in my book Why
Not Do God?
whose link from where you can buy it I gave several times. I
hope you review it, and thank you if you do.
